BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 2011 TORCH AWARDS FOR BUSINESS ETHICS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

AUGUST 17, 2011. The Oklahoma City Better Business Bureau announced today the winners of the organization’s annual Torch Awards for customer service and ethics in the OKC marketplace. The winners were chosen from among businesses Accredited by the OKC-BBB.

“Today, our purpose is to congratulate the businesses who have truly gone the extra mile, who consistently jump through hoops to satisfy their customers,” said OKC-BBB President Bob Manista. “The Bureau database was programmed to select the outstanding companies we’re honoring today based on the number of years in business, numbers of inquiries from the public, the manner and time in which disputes were settled, as well as factoring in Accreditation status and the number of employees and other statistical information deemed of importance by the Bureau’s management and Board of Directors.”

Each business has each earned the award based on years of exemplary service that any business owner or manager should be proud to have achieved.

Every year, one of the surprises for the BBB’s staff and Board is which auto dealer will top out over the rest when the awards are tabulated. This year, it’s BOB MOORE AUTO GROUP. Bob Moore has been a member since 1970, and even through the ups and downs of a crazy market with soft sales, Bob Moore and his staff have never lost sight of what’s really important: Putting folks in cars that suit them. Complimentary letters routinely remind us that his staff service the customer before, during and after the sale, and have been known to the BBB staff to bend internal policies to take care of problems that come up.

Champion Windows, which has been in operation in our area since 2001, but has roots in Ohio dating back to the 1950’s, conducts its business in Oklahoma City with precision, honesty, and great clarity. In many areas, the advertising of replacement windows is a real headache for Better Business Bureaus, but Champion is a major reason why this marketplace enjoys advertising in this industry. Recent programs like its efforts to curtail local hunger set it apart from competitors, but Champion remains at the forefront of product technology and customer service.

Feeling comfortable? Feeling cool? Thank Drabek and Hill, the official AC supplier of the Better Business Bureau. Over the past four years, Drabek and Hill have replaced each of the three units cooling this building, and the BBB expects to remain comfortable for years to come. It’s more than selling a good bid, it’s knowing that Drabek and Hill will be there to take care of the units and stand behind what they sell. That’s not an uncommon experience for the company’s customers. Since 1961, the company has shown all of its customers at least that level of speedy service, genuine care, and professionalism.

Each year during storm season, the BBB braces for the run of out-of-state businesses that rush into Oklahoma to convert wrecked roofs into big money, and the BBB scrambles to keep up with inquiries about all the new faces showing up in town. The Better Business Bureau and local home owners didn’t have to worry about Excel Roofing and Construction, though. Tom Balkins and his crews have been in the area for more than ten years, and all that time has been spent doing great work for their customers. They’ll be there to honor a warranty today, tomorrow, and next year.

Frontier City may be one of the newer Accredited Businesses to appear on this list of award winners after joining in 2008, but generations of Oklahomans have looked forward to the opening of the park and the thrills of a day spent at an amusement park. From individual tickets to groups, the patrons of the park come away with a safe, satisfying experience for children of all ages. Frontier City has become one of central Oklahoma’s best entertainment values, largely thanks to dollar-stretching season passes that keep the kids entertained and parents sane without going broke.

Like roofing, consumers want to know about the members of the in-home computer repair industry. Makes sense. When your home computer breaks down, there are all the usual concerns of inviting a stranger into your home, but you also have to find a company you trust with your personal memories, financial records, and other details that you can’t afford to have parading around in public. G & H Computer Repair jumped ahead of the pack. Providing solid repairs at affordable prices is one thing, but doing it in a manner people trust and have confidence in is what wins awards.

Globe Life Insurance has been around for a long time. Since 1953, in fact. And it joined the Better Business Bureau two years later, before there were websites and when operators used to read Bureau reports from file cards stocked in cabinets. Like most insurance companies, Globe receives complaints. Unlike many, Globe Life appears to take a genuine interest in satisfying its customers even when the letter of the policy and what the firm is required to do is clearly defined. Globe does an outstanding job of putting the truth of things into terms a layman can understand in an industry that too often relies on complicated language and user-specific terms.

When consumers can buy furniture from competitors ranging from converted gas station parking lots to internationally-known showrooms, it must be tempting for managers to resort to a shell game of advertising tactics, shoddy merchandise, and lackluster warranties. Mathis Brothers Furniture rises above the pack of the many fine furniture dealers in our area and leaves the shady operators in the dust with unparalleled customer support and quick dispute resolution practices. Discount stores may dabble in selling whatever cheap furniture fits on their trucks, but OKC consumers who buy quality merchandise know that Mathis Brothers is the place to go for what they need.

As one might expect, consumers are far more likely to request BBB reports or file complaints on big ticket items like cars and major repairs than incidental expenses. The largest single investment for most families is their home, and Richardson Homes has hammered together a solid reputation since joining the BBB in 2003. Offering high-quality construction at affordable prices, the company has become very familiar to Oklahoma residents thanks to its family-friendly jingle.

TINKER FEDERAL CREDIT UNION has served Oklahoma since 1946 and joined the BBB in 1991. Throughout its history, Tinker has been at the cutting edge of customer service and progressive thinking concerning everything from savings accounts to car loans. Most banking transactions are pretty straight-forward, aren’t they? You deposit money. You write a check. You pay your loans on time. How hard is it? You’d be surprised at the sort of complaints and misunderstandings that come up. You’d also be surprised at the patient, thoughtful, and thorough replies TFCU employees render when complaints do cross their desks.

Also honored at the event were Jennifer Griggy and Ali Meyer, both of KFOR, News Channel 4. Griggy is the morning show producer who consistently gives a voice to consumer news and warnings, and Meyer’s “Dolls and Dollars” reports have done a great job of educating the women of our area to their importance in the marketplace.

The BBB, its Board of Directors, Staff and Membership offer congratulations to all of the winners.

The concept of the Better Business Bureau giving awards for companies with outstanding customer service and a consistent display of solid ethics in the marketplace goes back decades. Now, about half of the 120 or so Bureaus across North America have one form of award under one name or another. The national umbrella organization (The Council of Better Business Bureaus) thought it was such a great idea that it adopted a nationwide award program a few years ago.
